Aspire not to have more but to be more – St Oscar Romero

Monday 18th May

Good morning to you all,

I hope you and your families are all well and that you have had a good weekend. It's the start of another week of home learning! Over the last few weeks you have been doing lots of fun activities focusing on flight. It's been great to see all your work via email and the blog, thank you. This week we are focusing our learning on boats, before we dive into the sea (after the holidays) to learn about Dougal the Deep Sea Diver!

The plan for today:

Phonics and reading

Please carry on joining in with the Set 3 Read Write Inc. lesson at 10.30am this morning. The sound today is 'ew' (chew the stew). If you are feeling confident with the sounds and green words taught then please focus on the spellings part of the lesson which starts at 10.45.

Our story today is called The Journey. I thought it may be nice for you to listen to the story first and then you can read it yourself so here is a video of me telling the story.

Please then read the story yourself using the link below. It may be a good idea to mute the video and then read it at your own pace by pausing each page, although the story is told at a good pace. Remember this is your first read so may involve lots of sounding out.

NEIL GRIFFITHS - The Journey

Once you have read the story there are some VIPERS questions to answer. Please print out the sheet below or write in your home learning book.

Comprehension questions

Maths

Today you are starting a new maths unit called Position and Direction. Use the PowerPoint presentation lesson 1 and follow the instructions. There are two activities to complete using the PowerPoint.  Discuss the following questions when completing the tasks:

Which way has your partner moved? How far? How many steps?
Which direction are you facing at the start? Is this important? Why?

Would you use up/down or forwards/backwards? Why?

If you feel confident with the instructions record the movements on a 2D grid. This can be found in your new maths packs or can be downloaded below. There is also an extra activity which can be completed called Memory Instructions.

Please note there is  PowerPoint presentation and a PDF version of the same document as I know some of you have struggled with viewing the PowerPoint.

Topic

Please look at the Topic star to choose an activity to complete this afternoon. There is a range of tasks to choose from, including making origami boats! Have fun! smiley
