Tuesday

Good morning Beech families,

I hope that your week has started well and you are enjoying your learning.

I am pleased to announce that some more children have reached 100 Dojos! These children are:

  • Orla
  • William
  • Grace
  • Evie
  • Olivia

Well done to you all smiley. You should be proud of how hard you are working.  There are lots getting close to 100 Dojos so I wonder who will be next!

Today you have the following lessons:

  • Speed Sounds
  • Reading
  • Handwriting
  • Maths
  • Music
  • PSHE
  • Story time

Don't forget to have some breaks too and enjoy some exercise.

I hope you have a fun day learning!

Speed Sounds

Well done for continuing to learn your sounds everyday, this is helping you become excellent readers and super spellers! You may have learnt all the sounds now, but it is good to keep practising these so that you become a more fluent reader and an accurate speller.

Set 2 sound today is 'ow' and the Set 3 sound is 'ear'. If your child confidently knows Set 3 sounds then also watch the 'Reading Longer' words video, this video focuses on 'ee/ea' sound.

Please watch the following videos:

  • Speed Sounds (either Set 2 or Set 3)
  • Spelling (either set 2 or Set 3)
  • Reading Longer Words (Set 3 only)
  • Hold a Sentence 1 (Children reading Set 2 words)
  • Hold a Sentence 2 (Children reading Set 3 words)

Reading

It is the second read of your book today. See whether you can read this with less sounding out. You may want to practise the Green and Red words before reading the book.

Reading Books

Handwriting

This week we are focusing on the 'Long Ladder' letters. I wonder, why they are called this? Remember to use your 'Get Ready' lines so that all letters start from the line. Practise all 6 letters using the handwriting booklet or on lined paper.

Maths

Year 1

Today your maths lesson is about subtraction crossing 10. You will use a number line to help you understand this. Watch the video and then complete the worksheet. Remember that you have some challenge cards for the week if you want to be stretched further! These challenge cards can be found on yesterday's page.

This Afternoon's Lessons

Music

I was so pleased to hear so many of you enjoyed your first music lesson using Yumu. Zootime seems to be lots of fun! Today you are moving on to Step 2, you will sing the catchy Zootime song again and include some instruments!

PSHE and Citizenship

This week we are thinking about having a positive attitude to learning and having a 'growth mindset'. I would like you to start the lesson by reading the story called 'The Best Dress Ever'.

Once you have read the story use the talk cards to discuss what you have read. Use as many of the questions as you like. In the story, Zid the alien had a 'can do' attitude, he wasn't willing to give up. This is part of a positive attitude/ 'growth mindset'. Here is some information for parents about 'growth mindset'. We use this approach to learning in school and it would be great if you could use this language at home.

Growth Mindset Guidance for Parents

As part of your lesson I would like you to choose an activity to do which will challenge you, something that you think will be really difficult! There are a few different ones for you to choose from. When you are doing this task I want to use to use  'growth mindset' thinking.

Here is a poster with growth mindset language which you may want to refer to when completing the challenge. You may also want to use them throughout the day whilst you are learning from home. Alternatively, for an extra Dojo today, why not create your own Growth Mindset poster which you can look at when something is difficult!

Story Time

Today our story is called Mama Panya's Pancakes. I will read the first part of the story to you. You may notice that not all the words are in English. That's because some of the words are in Swalhili. Did you know that Kenya is a multilingual country which means it speaks more than one language? In some villages, like the one in the story, they often speak three languages; a local language, Swahili and English!
