History

Toys

In our history lessons, the children are learning about toys from the past. We started by looking at toys from the present day before jumping into the past. We have looked at old and new toys and discussed how they are different using the related vocabulary. Our enquiry question is ‘What toys did your grandparents get for Christmas?’. The children have looked at different sources of information to find the answers and created a questionnaire for their grandparents to fill in.

The children worked in groups to research toys from the past. They used a range of non fiction books and recorded their findings on large sheets of paper. At the end of the lesson the groups presented to the rest of the class what they had found out.

In another lesson, the children considered what they had learnt about old toys. They selected pictures of toys and wrote about them. Using the stem sentence 'I know this toy is old because ...'

Remembrance Day

We spent time considering why we have Remembrance Day each year and why people wear poppies. We used different sources of information to answer our enquiry questions, such as stories, poems and pictures. The children then created poppy wreaths and wrote words in the middle of the wreaths to reflect on why this day is important.
