Aspire not to have more but to be more – St Oscar Romero

Year 1

Welcome back to home learning. We hope you have had a lovely Easter with your families. Please read the information below to give you a clearer picture of how we intend to work with you to set work for your child over the next few weeks. We hope you find this useful and if you want anymore details please do not hesitate to ask.

Our New Topic

Is 'Travel, Transport and Dougal'. We will follow this as best we can so we will be doing our best to keep our learning outcomes 'on track,'Our topic plan is included below.

Home Learning Folders

We feel that setting work using the website and using sheets/workbook from the home learning folders has been working well so we will continue to set work each day using this approach. We are in the process of creating new folders of work for each child. We are aiming for this to be completed by Wednesday afternoon. Once the folders are close to completion then we will give you more details about how/when to collect these from school. Please check on the class webpage for updates regarding this. Information will be found on the page named ‘Home Learning Folders’.

Phonics and Reading

The systematic teaching of phonics in Year 1 is crucial for children so that they make progress in reading and writing. Therefore, we recognise that children need to continue to learn sounds and read words while they are learning from home. At St Paul’s we use a programme called Read, Write Inc. written by Ruth Miskin.

The Ruth Miskin company are delivering live phonics lessons and we would like your child to access this teaching and learning. Your child would benefit from accessing the Set 2 and Set 3 Speed Sounds lessons daily (even when not mentioned as a task set for the day). The link for these lessons is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ/featured. Set 2 Speed sounds lesson is at 10am and the Set 3 sounds lesson is at 10.30am. Each lesson is just 10 minutes long. If you are unable to watch the videos at the given time then they are available to watch for 24 hours. This link also provides an abundance of short videos aimed at parents to give tips on how to support your child with learning sounds and reading at home.

We want to ensure that your child continues to make progress with reading and to do this they need to be reading a range of age appropriate books regularly (daily if possible). The Oxford Owl website provides a great selection of free ebooks which are from the same scheme that your child brings home from school to read. Please sign up to the website to access these books. Signing up is really simple. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

On a Monday and Tuesday your child will be given a choice of two books to read from the Oxford Owl website. This book will be a Read Write Inc. book. On Monday your child should read the Green and Red words at the beginning of the book and then read the story. On Tuesday your child should read the book a second time and then complete the questions at the back of the book. These questions can be discussion based or you can encourage your child to write their answers. Please note that at the beginning of the Read, Write Inc. books there is some information for parents to help you support your child with their reading.

Writing

Our written and grammatical lessons will run from a Wednesday to Friday. These will mostly link into our topic themed books, but will sometimes be cross curricular with our Religion, History or Geography work.

Maths

The maths work we set is following our yearly plan and  will continue as before with Powerpoint presentations to refer to and using the worksheets from the folder. This week the worksheets will be available on the website for you. My maths homework will also be set each week for children to complete.

Other Subjects

We aim to give your child a variety of activities to complete from a range of subjects. We will continue to provide some practical activities and occasionally have worksheet based tasks to complete.

Communication

We love to see what your child has been learning at home so please continue to share this using the school blog or the class email address. If you have any questions please email us at galileo@stpauls.cheshire.sch.uk.

Best wishes,

Mrs Rogers and Mrs Davies
