Aspire not to have more but to be more – St Oscar Romero

Monday 6th July

Good morning Galileo children and parents,

I hope you are all well and enjoying being able to get out and about a bit more. Today you have some reading tasks and some maths work to do which is slightly different to normal. As always, please choose a topic lesson from the Topic page for your afternoon work.

Phonics/Reading

Today you have your Read, Write Inc. reading and spelling tasks as you always do on a Monday. Please watch the following videos:

  • Word Time - learning the sound and reading the words. Today's sound is 'ur'
  • Spellings - learning how to spell words using the 'ur' sound.
  • Reading Red Words 2
  • Reading Longer Words including the 'oo' sound.

It would be great if you could also complete the 'Read and Hold a Sentence 2' task as this makes you think carefully about spelling words and using punctuation when writing sentences.

This week we are travelling into space and learning about famous astronauts and also some who are fictional. Today I would like you to read about a very well known astronaut called Neil Armstrong. Read the information and then answer the comprehension questions. I would suggest using the 3 star sheets. If you want to learn a bit more why not read the Read, Write Inc. non-fiction book called 'A Place in Space: the Moon'. This would be a great book to read on your own. There also many other ebooks on the Oxford Owl website about space and aliens so take you pick! You may enjoy some of the Project X reading books.

Spellings

It's time to have a little spelling test and start learning some new spellings! Please test your child on the spellings from last week and then give them a new set of spellings to learn.

Our Maths Learning Today

We are trying a slightly different maths presentation this week; which includes videos of our learning focus. We hope that you will enjoy this slight change; which still follows the national curriculum as we have throughout our home schooling period. This week we are going to look again at adding and subtracting; especially relating to column addition and subtraction. Mrs Rogers and I are aiming to consolidate our learning from this year as best we can as to help you to be 'Year 3 ready.' smileyyes

The time unit is tricky and so we will pause at quarter to and quarter past. This is something you could practice throughout the summer holidays. Next week we will put some further time work opportunities on our class page if you are ready to move on to looking at telling the time to within 5 minutes. This can be tricky!frown

Our worksheet for today. Print out if you are able or record your answers in your green book. These get trickier as you proceed with the questions. See how many you can do...

And if you would like to mark your work here are the answers.

Topic

Head over to the Topic page today to choose your lesson. The children in school will be learning about compass points in Geography and learning the songs in Music. Have a great day. smiley
